Knowledge for Tomorrow, for Dutch Minister of Education, culture and science

  • Elselien Smit brace@euronet.nl

Notes

Concept to create virtual workshop, use VRML, 6 different corridors, leading to other specific rooms

  • Communication, leading to mass media etc
  • Arts relating to multimedia and networks
  • Up to date topics on multimedia
  • harmonizing media
  • professionally oriented

Examples of innovative education:

  • Coop program
  • How does such and architecture support such as system
  • SITN stanford interactive tv network
  • Add experiencd to the program
  • Harvard advanced MBA all simulation, new models of education

Where will we go to in 15 years, knowledge for tomorrow, what do we need now?

Knowledge is aging so fast we expect university to go to 2 year programs done in intervals

Each room has un chef de salle

  • Could be an expert in a field or professor, not necessarily a teacher

More Elements

  • To keep up to date on newtech, professionals connecting to get help today for work tomorrow
  • People come together, discuss, build projects, practice connected intelligence online in a structured environment, diffuse ideas, with a library to file all documents
  • Use corridors to draw people to subjects
  • Content is brought in by people from all over the world
  • Debates are hosted in the environment

Architecture should contain structures to support this?

  • Documents
  • list of discussions
  • visual newsgroups
  • databases

Methods for capturing knowledge:

  • documents in world
  • capture logs
  • logs: choice to capture
  • contract
  • whisper
  • people stealing ideas

Methods of communication

  • text chat
  • voice
  • voice with video
  • gestures
  • emotions?
  • Passing documents
  • whiteboards sketchpads
  • graphity wall on net
  • simulation of instruments to train, field training videos
  • running of software on students computers, training
  • experience speaks
  • forums where people can share experiences
  • USC film school, teaching the lifestyle of the profession

Norms and values will be defined and developing over time.

We can use reconfigurable classrooms:

  • from circle to sphere
  • need to call in chairman as moderator if sizes exceed

Use of BOTS in the virtual university:

  • automated serving of classrooms and instructors
  • instructor-bot
  • librarian-bot
  • guides
  • staff: librarian, guides, intelligent agent
  • people finder bots

The Rooms and Corridor Model

Branched corridors with bots (refiners), corridors lead to services, classrooms, discussion areas, libraries.

The university is filtered, corridors etc are open depending on these choices.

Example: psychology to social systems, bots in branches and rooms,

Rooms for:

  • simulation
  • subset libraries
  • discussions
  • message boards

We must consider the language and culture and age of students, therefore we have to develop a series of filters for theU

  • language
  • age
  • culture
  • disposition and character of students

Means testing for entry into courses

  • Exams
  • Students to judge where they are

Qualification of studies

  • Curriculum
  • Open u or specialized?
  • Accreditation
  • peer review of work
  • commentary
  • publication?

Open university model

  • offers modules
  • put together modules for degree or could just take modules

Publication in the virtual u

  • papers and jouirnals
  • publications of complete books
  • textbooks, fully indexed into libraries

Enviromorphing stated by your profile

  • libraries
  • people
  • buildings
  • services

Your use of the environment, experiences morph your profile, opens new doors

What education is here?

  • A Journey through the u, the world
  • Enviromorphic
  • End of mass, back to old model of mentors and followers, leonardo dv
  • Not a pushU, exchange, pullU
  • Pushes When do you need a little suggestion

Character of the students

  • active
  • passive
  • exploring, may bounce around
  • participatory
  • sedatory
  • isolated workers
  • leaders
  • followers
  • social
  • need individual tutors

Handling interruptions etc: instructor gets side list of questions which may be answered by other students so instructor does not have to stop.

How do you manage group dynamics, standard label for type of person.

  • Automatic seating of students based on their type.. back row versus front row. Can leave without disturbing others.
  • Non disturbing ways of leaving, star trek
  • environment will change around you
  • Marking avatars to level of knowlege, dunce cap versus graduation doctoral cap vs hard hat

Lifestyle necessary in a profession?

  • Orientation to unversity or professions for entering, intested students
  • Career selection
  • Speak with other students about their experiences

There is a difference between studying versus working in the subject: use of the simulation room, contact of professionals in industry The virtual U bridges the world of theory and the subject with everyday working application and the professional lifestyle. Lifelong learning, knowledge for tomorrow is literally tomorrow.

Lastly, this effort should encourage the connexion between unversities and companies
